The namesake of the Love, Andrew Autism Foundation, this sixth-grader “is now very social, conversational, independent, very physically fit, super healthy, and adorably sweet,” according to his Mom, Nicole Schumacher.

Andrew used to be quite different. He was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) at age 3-1/2. His diagnosis more than 10 years ago devastated the Schumacher family.

Nicole describes Andrew’s early years as a “terrifying time in my life” and experiencing “the strangest feeling of loss.” She realized, “I can’t parent him in the typical way, so I’m going to have to do something unconventional!”

With training through the Son-Rise program and Brain Balance, along with tireless work at home, Andrew has improved greatly.

Every morning he gets up, takes a shower, makes his own food, and is a part of family life. He’s in a regular classroom at school and he has friends who treat him like he’s part of their family.

Nicole, along with her husband, Paul, is the co-founder of Love, Andrew Autism Foundation, Inc. Although Nicole has a Ph.D. in psychology, it wasn’t until her younger son, Andrew, was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) that her work with autism truly blossomed. Nicole realized the family needed to change perspective. “As long as I believed that my son’s autism was a horrible, irreversible and permanent condition, I would continue to feel depressed and anxious. I couldn’t do that anymore. I decided, instead, to believe that anything was possible – even when most experts, at the time, disagreed. I started with what I knew Andrew could do, rather than with all the hundreds of things he couldn’t do – yet. Andrew has awakened us to live a more meaningful life,” says Nicole, also the mother of two other children: Paul, Jr., 14, and Brooke, 5.

Since September 2011, Robert has worked as the creative director of the Autism Asperger’s Digest. He has more than 5 years' experience in all facets of non-profits. Robert focuses much of his passion talking and evangelizing the holistic approach his family utilizes with his older daughter, age 11, to tackle the day-to-day challenges of autism. It’s his desire to help unite all caregivers within the autism community and to provide life tools for achieving and surpassing all goals. He believes there is no better way to manage anything than with love, a positive attitude, lots of grace, and the belief that all things are possible.

Chief Financial Officer of the Love, Andrew Autism Foundation (LAAF);” Heather currently serves as the top “Executive Administrative Ninja” for Schumacher Homes, Inc. She continues to generously donate numerous hours to the development and creation of the Love, Andrew Autism Foundation. She works closely with Nicole Schumacher on The Star Room project for public schools. Her strong passion and dedication to the project is powered by the energy and excitement of the extraordinary children with autism who experience the Star Room every day!
